Muhammad Natsir displayed unwavering determination in defending the The Republic of Indonesia. This was evident through his active involvement in various social, political, and religious movements. From 1967 until the end of his life, he served as the founder and president of the Indonesian Islamic Propagation Council (Dewan Dakwah Islam Indonesia: DDII) in Jakarta. Natsir hailed from a devout and humble Muslim family. At a young age, he imbibed Islamic values, encountered contextual influences, and witnessed the pervasive impact of Islamic ideas in society. His strong personal discipline, unwavering commitment to rigorous learning, and the guidance of dedicated teachers played a pivotal role in shaping his character. As a reformist, statesman, politician, scholar, preacher, and revered figure both at home and abroad, M. Natsir embraced the principles of Western democracy. Although M. Natsir, as one of the political Islamic figures in Indonesia, did not wholly reject Western democracy, he proposed a unique variant known as Theistic Democracy. M. Natsir’s concept of theistic democracy aimed to reconcile the theory of popular sovereignty with the sovereignty of God. He refused theocracy and secularization systems while embracing the notion of nationalism. Furthermore, according to M. Natsir, democracy should be founded on principles that uphold.
