Islamic Education Management Expertise: A Literature Review of Managerial Competence, Spiritual Leadership, and Digital Transformation

Managerial expertise is a decisive factor in the success of Islamic educational institutions in facing quality demands, governance requirements, and rapid socio-technological change. This article aims to map the concept and dimensions of Islamic education management expertise based on a literature review of articles published in international and nationally accredited journals between 2018 and 2026. A narrative literature review with a thematic approach was employed, tracing academic databases to identify classical managerial competency concepts and their application to madrasah, Islamic school, and pesantren contexts. The findings show that expertise in Islamic education management is multidimensional, encompassing conceptual expertise in formulating vision and policy based on maqasid al-shariah, technical expertise in curriculum, learning, and human-resource planning, interpersonal expertise coloured by spiritual and prophetic leadership, quality-management expertise that integrates Total Quality Management with the values of Amanah and Ihsan, digital expertise that is increasingly urgent in the Society 5.0 era, and financial-management expertise that sustains the long-term institutional viability of Islamic educational institutions. The review also identifies a research gap in the empirical, cross-country measurement of expertise and the scarcity of systematic comparison between Islamic and conventional management models. The article concludes that developing expertise in Islamic education management requires an integrated framework that unites professional and spiritual dimensions, and recommends a future research agenda focused on developing empirically validated instruments for measuring value-based managerial competence.
